June 24, 1947:

Some thought the nine shiny disc-shaped UFOs (led by a
crescent-shaped object) moving at an estimated 1200 mph
in formation were secret experimental government craft.
Some thought they were a flock of geese.
Balloons strung together.
An outright hoax.
Yet, after 76 years have passed, Kenneth Arnold's famous
sighting of "flying saucers" (the incident spurred the
press to coin the term) over Mt. Rainier still remains
unexplained.
It was the sighting credited by most historians as having
started the modern UFO era.
Celebrate today with these party favorites:

And then watch old TV shows like:

(This is THE show that Fred Lee Crisman mentioned in letters
to me in 1967! He said the "truth" is embodied in the scripts!)

Oh my gosh!!

So the military says, "Hey, guys, fly your planes
over here! Go look over here" and Arnold does it
and he "Sees" martians!

It was a test. They were trying out something,
probably an experimental decoy system, and they
wanted to see what unsuspecting pilots would
report.

And I doubt Arnold was the only one. Likely he
wasn't even the first. Even fewer people, back
then, would be willing to state that they saw
"Foo Fighters" than today.

...it probably took anywhere from two to
18 "Sightings" before anyone would report
anything...
